Hurricanes rugby wing David Smith was arrested in Wellington on Sunday morning for a drink driving offence which came just a day after the Hurricanes were knocked out of the Super 14 by the Chiefs.
Smith's arrest was announced by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU).
While the matter is subject to a police investigation the NZRU said both it and Hurricanes team management would not comment.
"Once the legal process has concluded, the NZRU will commence its own misconduct process," the NZRU said in a statement
The NZRU said that the collective agreement between it and its professional players included a formal process for investigating any incidents of misconduct.
Smith played for the Blues last season but returned to the Hurricanes this season and enjoyed excellent form in the latter part of the season.
