All Blacks and Hurricanes flanker Scott Waldrom will be out of rugby for up to three months after he suffered a serious injury in last weekend's Super 14 semi-final clash against the Chiefs.
Waldrom broke three bones in his back in a ruck collision during the Hurricanes 14-10 loss in Hamilton.
The injury has ended any hopes he had of making the All Black squad for the All Black's June tests and the TriNations.
Waldrom,28, made his international debut last November during in the All Blacks end of year tour when he played against Munster in Limerick.
He had enjoyed some solid form in this year's Super 14 and could have lined up as a ossible backup to All Blacks captain and openside Richie McCaw when coach Graham Henry names his squad on Sunday.
"I'm on the back foot at the moment," a disappointed Waldrom told Radio Sport.
"I certainly would have liked to get a cap but unfortunately it puts me on the sideline and gives someone else a chance."
All Blacks coach Henry has indicated that he wants two specialist openside flankers in his squad which means that Chiefs No 7 Tanerau Latimer could be the front runner for a place behind McCaw.
