Burger goes off injured in Stormers warm up

Springbok flank and Stormers captain Schalk Burger left the field after 15 minutes.

That was about the most noteworthy incident in the first half of the warm-up match between what was clearly mostly the Stormers' also-rans and a Boland Invitation XV at the new soccer stadium in Green Point on Saturday.

For the record, the Stormers won the match 47-13 which started with a bang when Stormers hooker Deon Fourie rounded off a storming sprint of 40 metres.

But that Fourie try was a promise of things to come that deceived until the last 15 minutes when both teams had a long list of replacements on the field.

No news on the seriousness of Burger's injury was forthcoming except that coach Allister Coetzee said he was worried.

Burger watched from the side with an ice-pack to his right shoulder.

The Stormers lineouts were poor, their scrums rather good, their reluctance to work in the rucks noticeable and their general play disappointing.

When Bryan Habana came on 13 minutes before the end he too couldn't hold on.

But then, the pass wasn't great. The mere fact that the Stormers made 43 tackles in the first half against the 22 of a side that couldn't make the step up to the Currie Cup Premier Division tells the story of a poor first half.

There was a little more life and structure after the break, and a total of seven tries - five in the second half - will probably satisfy most.

What's more, the Stormers kept the Boland scoreless after the break. Sireli Naqelevuki, the man they love to hate in the Cape, had a lively game with ball in hand and without it.

Ricky Januarie looked slimmer after his stint with the Ospreys but will still be known as Two-Step Ricky through his inability to pass from the ground and Willem de Waal, searching for decent game time after a long-term injury, had one of those games which cannot be gauged because of a rather loose pack that seldom provided a decent platform.

But that is the nature of the warm-up game, and not too much will probably be read into it.

However, it also didn't provide any answers except that young flyhalf Lionel Cronje has vision and skills as he proved with his cross-kick that set up Naqelevuki's try, and that flanker Pieter Louw is up to Super 14 standard.

And Fourie's early try was followed up with good work throughout.
