Reds lose Hynes and Kingi for Chiefs clash

Wallaby back Peter Hynes has been ruled out of the Reds team for Friday's Super 14 match against the Chiefs in New Zealand, as has reserve scrumhalf Richard Kingi.

Hynes dislocated his finger in last Saturday night's match against the Blues, while Kingi injured his hamstring in Sunday's QAS Reds 2nd XV match against the Junior Waratahs.

Queensland Reds Head Coach Ewen McKenzie said Hynes would be rested for this match and reassessed before the Reds' home game against the Western Force on Sunday week, while Kingi would be out of action for "a couple of weeks".

"Peter Hynes hasn't come through well enough to take his place this week," McKenzie said.

"We will reassess it next week. It could maybe be a little longer, but we've got a nine day turnaround after the Chiefs game for the Force. It gives us a good opportunity between now and then to see."

There was some positive news around reserve back Tim Walsh (broken knuckle), who McKenzie said may be sidelined for 2-3 weeks rather than the 4-5 weeks originally thought, however the Reds are resigned to being without wing Rod Davies for four weeks with a fractured cheekbone.

"There is a bit of a casualty ward but these things happen when you're playing for keeps," McKenzie said.

McKenzie said he would announce his squad before the team flies out tomorrow and decide his team closer to the match date.

"We do have good options (as injury replacements). We've got a bunch of guys with Super Rugby experience waiting in the background to get an opportunity.

"They're guys who have been out there and done it before so we'll obviously sift through the possibilities and combinations and permutations that are possible for us and come up with the best combo for this game.

"We'll play around with the possibilities and then finalise it closer to the game."
