Wallabies captain David Pocock is in doubt for Australia's Bledisloe Cup rematch with the All Blacks and the rest of tournament after after he sustained a knee injury in their 19-27 in the Rugby Championship opener.

Pocock is to consult with a surgeon in the morning after he suffered damage to the articular cartilage of his right knee in the first half of the match, with the nature of the injury confirmed by scans this morning.

Australia coach Robbie Deans said the scans on his injured knee would determine whether he will be fit to play in next weekend's match.

Asked if Pocock was likely to miss the match at Eden Park, where New Zealand is unbeaten against Australia in 26 years, Deans said "that's a possibility."

Deans said scrumhalf Will Genia would captain Australia if Pocock was unavailable.

Meanwhile Western Force No 8 Ben McCalman, who had been part of the wider Qantas Wallabies training group, underwent surgery last evening after fracturing the radius in his forearm.

McCalman, who was returning from a nerve injury in his shoulder which had sidelined him for much of the year, is expected to be out of action for a minimum of three months.
